ABOUT THE PROJECT

During the winter months, The City of Calgary tackles the snow ...

The City is responsible for delivering our Council-approved Snow and Ice program. It prioritizes the response on roads and mobility infrastructure during winter. For example, during and after snowfall, higher volume roads, sidewalks next to city owned property, Light Rail Transit stations and prioritized pathways are cleared within 24 hours of snowfall ending.

Our snow response is guided by the Snow and Ice Control (SNIC) Policy (CP2021-01), which details how we prioritize work. This Policy is used to establish priorities, state intent, and set standards and service levels of our program.

How does The City choose what to focus on during snow events?

An effective program is necessary for our city to function following snow events. The intent of The City’s Snow and Ice program is to:

  • reduce hazards of winter conditions for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,
  • ease operation of Transit and Emergency Services vehicles,
  • reduce delays caused by the snow,
  • and minimize economic loss to our community.

You may have heard of The City’s seven-day snow plan, this is our Council approved response plan. It is guided by the SNIC policy. It prioritizes mobility for Calgarians based on use and need.

How can I have a say in how snow services are delivered?

The City’s SNIC Policy has not been updated since 2011. It needs an update to meet operational and community needs. A full report back to Council is expected in 2023. This update will shape future service level priorities that consider public safety, the environment, mobility, equity and accessibility.
