Playground Optimization Program - Overview

Community park space is highly valued by Calgarians of all ages, providing opportunities to connect with nature and each other. That’s why we’re improving and reimagining under-used and aging playgrounds and park spaces to better meet the needs of the community.

When old playgrounds need replacing, we work with the community to determine how the space can be enhanced with new playground equipment or reimagined with new park amenities, like picnic tables, benches and areas for recreation.

Through the Parks And Playground Amenities Program (PAPA) and the Playground Optimization Program, we’ve selected community park spaces that are in need of new playground equipment or new park amenities.

Optimization Process - Reimagining Options

We’re focused on making old playgrounds and under-used park spaces better for everyone in the community. In Calgary, we aim to have 5 nearby playgrounds for every 1000 kids under 12. In cases where there are less children and too many playgrounds, we look to reimagine certain play spaces so they appeal to a broader demographic. By working with the Community Association, we look at what new amenities could transform the space for the better and invite gathering, games and play. When we add new playground equipment and amenities to a park space, it can make the park more inviting for more people in the community. Everyone in Calgary values green spaces, and we do our best to make these spaces enjoyable for all!
