YYC/LRT: Community based art as a form of community engagement

We’re experimenting with a more creative and engaging future on Stephen Avenue.

The City of Calgary and the University of Calgary have teamed up to brighten and enliven a key intersection on Stephen Avenue leading into Calgary’s densest residential neighbourhood, Downtown West.

YYC/LRT is a public sculpture, shadow projection device, satellite studio and place for creative public engagement created by Bryan Faubert and stewarded by the University of Calgary.

The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Art, Werklund School of Education and Haskayne School of Business have partnered with Contemporary Calgary and the Downtown West Community Association to test out art-based community engagement. Workshops will be run over the next two years until spring 2023. The project will instigate ideas of placemaking to build community connections with those who live, work and play in downtown Calgary.

Tell us what you think

This intervention is part of the City of Calgary’s Activate + Experiment phase as we re-imagine Stephen Avenue from City Hall to Mewata Armoury. In this phase we’ll be testing out ideas and measuring impacts, to help inform the future of our iconic downtown main street.
