When we build new communities, our first thoughts go to the basic needs of the people living in them – housing for them to live in, roads and pathways for them to move in, and utility servicing to provide their basic needs like water and heat.
Beyond those required elements are the features of a community that provide it with its unique identity, and no two communities will have the exact same mixture of places to work, shop, play, and connect. The way these features are provided and located will give a community its own unique fingerprint within the City of Calgary.
Before asking for your feedback on the type of community you envision within the North Central plan area, please consider these four key community features:
Parks and Natural Areas – Spaces that people can use every day to walk, relax, and connect with nature. They help shape the identity of a community by creating spaces people can appreciate and care for over time, while also protecting and preserving important ecological areas. These spaces could be a quiet pathway cutting through open fields or shady trees, or a natural area around a wetland left mostly untouched.

Places to Gather and Connect - Great communities include amenities where people can meet, shop, eat, and spend quality time together. These amenities are spaces that support daily life, bring people together, and help create a strong sense of community culture and identity. Examples of these spaces include cultural / religious assembly spaces, concert halls, libraries, main streets, patios and plazas.

Places to Play and Recreate - Active and supportive communities provide facilities and features where people can learn, grow, and push themselves physically. These can be structured indoor facilities like arenas and field halls, or outdoor spaces like sports courts, skateparks and playgrounds. These places are essential for competition, physical development and fun.
Places to Work - Jobs, businesses, and services that support the local economy close to home - including institutional, office, industrial and commercial spaces - will provide employment opportunities on the North Central lands. A diversity of business types within the community is key to providing a space where all sorts of people can live and thrive.
