Throughout 2024 and 2025, we heard feedback from community members about safety concerns in the Big Marlborough Park west parking lot, including large gatherings, noise complaints and harassment. In addition, we heard from community members during engagement that pathway connections into the park from the west parking lot needed to be improved.

In response, we have worked with internal experts, design consultants, and The City of Calgary Corporate Security team to ensure the new park design addresses these challenges. The proposed west parking lot redesign will consider community feedback, Corporate Security recommendations, design standards including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) standards, impacts to hills and trees, plans to improve the Maidstone Drive N.E. crosswalk, as well as improved entry and connections into Big Marlborough Park.

Accessibility and safety remain top priorities for this project. Future improvements will include automated gates, enhanced lighting, pathway upgrades and the recommended redesign of the west parking lot.

Currently, the west parking lot is partially hidden by a hill, creating a secluded area that has resulted in safety concerns. Redesigning the west parking lot will improve visibility and connections, as well as maintain parking for park users. The recommendation to redesign the parking lot was made by several internal groups in Fall 2025, and the exact redesign of the west parking lot and pathway improvements have yet to be finalized.

We recognize these improvements may have impacts on residents living near the west parking lot and want to hear from you. Between May 11 and 25, 2026, residents will have the opportunity to complete an online survey and share their thoughts regarding the west parking lot. We value your feedback and it will be used to help inform the design choices made by the project team to improve the west parking lot.
