About the project

This project is Phase 2 of the 26 Avenue S.W. Mobility Improvements. Phase 1 of the project included safety improvements to three intersections between Sarcee Trail and 37 Street S.W. The construction for Phase 1 was completed in 2022. Phase 2 covers 26 Avenue S.W. between 37 Street and 14 Street S.W.

26 Avenue S.W. is an important corridor that connects multiple established communities in the southwest. With Phase 2, we want to make 26 Avenue S.W. better for you, your families, and your communities. It is one of the few roads that provides continuity over Crowchild Trail in the southwest quadrant north of Glenmore Trail S.W.

This road is also a part of the 5A (Always Available for All Ages and Abilities) network, which is a city-wide mobility network consisting of off-street pathways and on-street wheeling lanes. People use 26 Avenue S.W. in different ways including walking, wheeling, taking transit or driving. We want to make this road safe and convenient for everyone.

Our three goals for Phase 2 are to improve safety for everyone, increase travel choices, and enhance the experience of using the road. Share your thoughts with us!

What we heard

In Summer 2021, we asked for your input on 26 Avenue S.W between Sarcee Trail and 14 Street S.W. You can review the What We Heard Report here: What We Heard Report: 26 Ave SW and Buckmaster Park – Fall 2021

The main concerns that are relevant to the Phase 2 area include:

  • Cycling safety
  • Visibility at crossings on 26 Avenue S.W. and side streets (due to density of parked cars)
  • Road condition and speed

The combination of the project goals, City policies, technical information and engagement feedback guided the development of the three proposed options for Phase 2.

Current Engagement - Phase 2: 26 Ave S.W. mobility improvements

26 Avenue SW Mobility Improvements - Project Boundary (37th to 14th St S.W.)

26 Avenue SW Improvements Project Boundary (37th to 14th St S.W.)

What we want to know

Now we need your help with Phase 2 of the project. This phase covers 26 Ave SW from 14 St SW to 37 St SW. This street is part of the 5A network, which aims to provide a safe street for everyone, whether you walk, wheel or take transit.

Our goals are to:

  • Improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
  • Increase transportation choices for different modes.
  • Enhance the experience of using the street.

Share your feedback for Phase 2

We want to hear from you about the three options being considered for 26 Avenue S.W. Phase 2. The feedback collected will help the project team identify the preferred option and make any refinements that will further improve mobility while meeting the project goals.

The three options are:

  • Option 1: Multi-use pathway
  • Option 2: On-street wheeling lanes
  • Option 3: Blend of option 1 and 2 with on-street wheeling lanes west of 22 Street and multi-use pathway east of 22 Street S.W.

In the tabs below you will find:

  • Benefits & Trade-offs + Survey (by proposed option),
  • Options Features (by proposed option - more detailed)
  • Resource Maps (High resolution downloads and low resolution slide shows)
  • and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Please review the three options and remember submit to your responses. (red box @ bottom of survey)

Options - Benefits & Trade-offs + Survey

Option 1- Multi-use pathway

Option 1 -Corridor view - Multi-use Pathway on the north side of 26 Avenue S.W.

Option 1 -Corridor view - Multi-use Pathway on the north side of 26 Avenue S.W.

Option 1 provides a new multi-use pathway along the north side of 26 Avenue S.W. This replaces the existing painted bike lanes (west of 22 Street S.W.) and the shared wheeling / driving lanes (east of 22 Street S.W.).

  • West of 22 Street S.W., this pathway is separate from the existing sidewalk.
    • On-street parking on the south side is removed.
  • East of 22 Street S.W., this pathway replaces the existing sidewalk.
    • On-street parking remains on the south side only.
  • There are no changes to the south sidewalk for the entire corridor.

West

Option 1 Example - Multi-use pathway - West - 37 Street S.W. to 22 Street S.W.

Option 1 Example - Multi-use pathway - West - 37 Street S.W. to 22 Street S.W. - (Details on Option Features Tab)

East

Option 1 Example - Multi-use pathway - East - 22 Street S.W. to 14A Street S.W.

Option 1 Example - Multi-use pathway - East - 22 Street S.W. to 14A Street S.W. - (Details on Option Features Tab)

Benefits

  • All transit stops are next to driving lanes, making it safer for transit users to board and exit a bus
  • Greater opportunity to improve corner ramps at intersections, (compared to Option 2 – On-street wheeling lanes.)
  • More predictable and comfortable as people wheeling remain on the multi-use pathway from 37 St to 14A Street. It also allows for a more direct route (via 14A Street and 25 Avenue) to the wheeling route on Prospect Avenue east of 14 Street
  • Narrower driving lanes encourage slower speeds and less traffic noise
  • Reduced parking capacity means there is more visibility of everyone on the street
  • Shorter crosswalks across 26 Avenue S.W.
  • The road is safer by providing separation between people walking, wheeling and driving
  • West of 22 Street, there is separation and more comfort between people wheeling and walking

Trade-offs

  • Accessible parking or loading zones will need to be relocated to the side streets
  • East of 22 Street S.W., on-street parking is removed on north side
  • East of 22 Street, people walking and wheeling share the pathway which can cause discomfort
  • Higher construction cost than other options
  • On-street parking is removed west of 22 Street S.W.

14A Street S.W. to 14 Street S.W.

All options include a wheeling connection via 14A Street and 25 Avenue S.W. to route users to the existing on-street bikeway on Prospect Avenue S.W. across 14 Street S.W. The details of this connection are still under review.

Option 2- On-street wheeling lanes

Wheeling lane on both sides of avenue

Option 2 provides protected on-street wheeling lanes on either side of 26 Avenue S.W. from 37 Street S.W to 14 Street S.W. This replaces the existing painted bike lanes (west of 22 Street S.W.) and the shared wheeling / driving lanes (east of 22 Street S.W.).

The existing sidewalks on either side remain in place.

  • On-street parking is no longer accommodated on 26 Avenue S.W. between 37 Street S.W. and 14A Street S.W.

West

Option 2 Example - Wheeling lanes - West- 37 Street S.W. to 22 Street S.W.

Option 2 Example - Wheeling lanes - West- 37 Street S.W. to 22 Street S.W. - (Details on Option Features Tab)

East

Option 2 - Wheeling lanes - East - 22 Street S.W. to 14A Street S.W.

Option 2 - Wheeling lanes - East - 22 Street S.W. to 14A Street S.W. - (Details on Option Features Tab)

14A Street S.W. to 14 Street S.W.

All options include a wheeling connection via 14A Street and 25 Avenue S.W. to route users to the existing on-street bikeway on Prospect Avenue S.W. across 14 Street S.W. The details of this connection are still under review.

Benefits

  • Accommodates wheeling users on the right-hand side of the road relative to the direction of travel
  • All transit stops are next to driving lanes, making it safer for transit users to board and exit a bus
  • Lower construction cost than other options
  • Narrower driving lanes encourage slower speeds and less traffic noise.
  • Reduced parking capacity means there is more visibility of everyone on the street
  • The road is safer by providing separation between people walking, wheeling and driving along the entire corridor

Trade-offs

  • Accessible parking or loading zones will need to be relocated to the side streets
  • Crosswalks across 26 Avenue S.W. remain the same and are not shorter
  • Less opportunity to improve corner ramps at intersections, compared to Option 1 – Multi-use pathway.
  • No on-street parking on 26 Avenue S.W. between 37 Street and 14 Street S.W.
  • People wheeling on the eastbound wheeling lane must cross 26 Avenue S.W. before 14A Street to continue on the cycling route
  • Transit users must cross the wheeling lanes to get to the bus stops
  • Wheeling lanes may be less comfortable for some people as they are closer to the driving lane

Option 3 - On-street wheeling lanes and multi-use pathway

Wheeling lanes west of 22 Street S.W. and Muti-use pathway east of 22 Street S.W.

This option replaces the existing painted bike lanes with a combination of on-street wheeling lanes (west of 22 Street S.W.) and a multi-use pathway (east of 22 Street S.W.).

  • No-parking zone is extended on north side between 37 Street S.W. and 14A Street S.W.
  • No-parking zone is installed on south side between 37 and 22 Street S.W.
  • On-street parking remains on the south side between 22 Street and 14 Street S.W.
