Naming Proposal for a Park in Sunnyside

The City of Calgary has received an application to name park SSD120 in the northwest community of Sunnyside. The proposed name is “Violet King Park.”

Naming public assets in Calgary is guided by the Naming of City Assets Policy. Applications that demonstrate initial community support and meet policy requirements move forward to broader public engagement under The City’s Engage Policy. Such engagement aims to create an inclusive and transparent conversation about the proposal.

This engagement seeks input from residents of Sunnyside and neighbouring communities on the proposal to name the park “Violet King Park” in recognition of Violet King, Calgarian and the first Black woman lawyer in Canada.

For more information about Violet King, please visit Heritage Calgary.

Please submit your feedback by November 13, 2025. Thank you for participating in this engagement. Your input will help inform The City’s decision.
