PROJECT UPDATE

Public engagement on locations for traffic calming improvements ran from December 1- 17, 2021. Feedback from the engagement can be found in the What We Heard Report (Phase 3).

An error was identified in the original What We Heard for Phase 3 that was published in March 2022. For question 11, the legend was incorrect in the chart, as was the description of the data that followed. This has since been corrected, with an updated report published December 2022.

Please visit the Silver Springs Neighbourhood Streets project page for updates and more information.

NEXT STEPS

The input received from public engagement has been shared with the project team and the results will be used to inform the project. Updates on next steps, including the installation of additional safety enhancements and permanent traffic calming measures, is expected in the spring/early summer.

Project Overview

The Neighbourhood Streets Silver Springs project launched in fall 2020 in a partnership between The City of Calgary and the Silver Springs Community Association, with the goal of creating streets where neighbours can connect and have access to travel options for all ages and abilities. There will be three phases of public engagement to identify, prioritize and evaluate mobility in the community of Silver Springs.

The Neighbourhood Streets Silver Springs project includes:

  • Community engagement to identify, prioritize and evaluate areas where we can make changes to the streets in Silver Springs
  • Installation of temporary wheeling facilities on Silver Springs Boulevard in addition to traffic calming and pedestrian improvements throughout the community
  • Installation of permanent infrastructure starting in 2022, and beyond, based on public engagement to evaluate and test the temporary measure, technical analysis, prioritization and available resources

What We Heard

This project will have three phases of engagement:

Phase 1: Identification - September – October 2020

  • During the first phase of engagement, we will be asking what is working well and what is challenging for those travelling through and living in the community. To view the What We Heard (Phase 1) click here.

Phase 2: Prioritization – November 2020

  • Phase two of public engagement was to validate and priortize criteria for selecting mobility improvement that we heard in phase one of engagement. To view the What We Heard (Phase 2) click here.

Phase 3: Evaluation – December 2021

  • Temporary measures were installed in 2021, and Phase 3 of public engagement took place in December 2021, to evaluate the effectiveness and impacts of wheeling facilities, traffic calming measures and pedestrian improvements. To view the What We Heard (Phase 3) click here.

ENGAGEMENT PROCESS

Your input, and the input of other citizens and stakeholders, helps The City understand people’s perspectives, opinions, and concerns. Input collected in each phase of the project will be compiled and share through a What We Heard report.

Although it would be a great outcome, the goal of public engagement is not to reach consensus or make everyone happy. Public engagement is also not about voting or collecting representative information. Public engagement is about considering the input, ideas and perspectives of people who are interested or impacted by decisions, before decisions are made.

This project will have three phases of engagement:

Phase 1 – Identification

    • During this phase of engagement, we will be asking what is working well and what is challenging for those travelling throughout and living in the community.

Phase 2 – Prioritization

    • Based on improvements identified in Phase 1, as well as issues previously identified by the CA, we will be prioritizing improvements to install using temporary materials in 2021.

Phase 3 – Evaluation

  • After the temporary improvements have been installed, we will evaluate their effectiveness and impacts to determine if any modifications need to be made before permanent installation that could start in 2022 based on available resources. This will include collecting feedback from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders.
