ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Calgary and Area Pathway and Bikeway Plan was developed in 2000. It is being updated to reflect changes that have taken place in Calgary since the plan was approved. Many of the proposed pathways and bikeways from the original plan were built. Some of the proposed pathways and bikeways are now obsolete because of changes to the road network or approved developments. New policies have been approved that impact the plan and the needs of Calgarians have changed over time.

Through public engagement and technical work on this project it was confirmed that an Always Available for All Ages and Abilities (5A) Network is needed in Calgary. The update to the Calgary and Area Pathway and Bikeway Plan includes 5A Network principles and a map. The 5A Network principles support community connections and providing Calgarians of all ages and abilities with safe and accessible year-round opportunities to walk and wheel throughout Calgary. They support travel for all purposes, including to work, school, social, recreational or commercial activities. Also, the 5A Network principles and the map will provide connectivity to other transportation services, like public transit and parking.

PROJECT ENGAGEMENT

Public engagement for the project is now complete. The What We Did Report outlines how feedback from Phase One and Two of engagement informed decisions throughout the project.

In Phase Two, we gathered input from you that was used to help us prioritize future pathway and bikeway investments. You also shared feedback on what types of pathways and bikeways you are most likely to use. This information helped us develop principles and a map for the Always Available for All Ages and Abilities (5A) Network. Engagement consisted of in-person events and an online questionnaire from May 15 to June 11, 2018.

A summary of feedback and verbatim comments received during Phase Two can be found within the What We Heard Report.

In Phase One, we asked for your help to identify challenges and difficulties with the current pathway and bikeway network, along with the locations that you travel to using the current network. You shared your feedback on our current pathway and bikeway network using an online survey and two online mapping tools. The feedback provided helped us develop network principles and map for the 5A Network. The online survey and map-based feedback opportunities were available from June 1 - 30, 2017.

A summary of feedback and verbatim comments received during Phase One can be found within the What We Heard Report.

NEXT STEPS

The Always Available for All Ages and Abilities (5A) Network principles will be presented to the Standing Policy Committee on Transportation and Transit on December 18, 2019.

The project team continues to refine the 5A Network map using public feedback and technical analysis. It is anticipated that it will be presented to committee and Council in Q2 2020.
