Project Update

During Phase 2, we shared two design concepts that featured a dry pond, space for recreational activities, natural landscaping, and inviting areas for community connection and social gatherings.

From the feedback we received, people expressed a strong interest in blending elements from both design concepts. Below are the key themes that emerged.

  • Community Garden

Feedback showed that people supported a community garden that could bring neighbours together, especially those without access to their own yard space.

  • Sport Court

We heard it was important to have recreational opportunities within the park space for activities such as basketball or court sports.

  • Benches & Tables

People wanted the design to incorporate benches and tables for picnics as well as areas to sit and relax.

  • Unstructured Play

People wanted an open space for unstructured activities like kicking a ball or playing catch.

  • Accessible Pathways

Participants wanted to ensure there were paved pathways for wheelchairs or strollers etc. that would be accessible for all ages and abilities.

  • Natural elements

Respondents wanted to incorporate landscaping throughout the space with boulders, wood, and natural elements to look aesthetically pleasing.

  • Fire Pit & Ice Rink

Currently, the project team is taking the necessary steps to incorporate a fire pit and ice rink into the final design.

Connecting with the Community

We provided community awareness about the project in the following ways:

  • Ongoing collaboration with the Meadowlark Park Community Association (CA) to get the word out by utilizing their networking connections and newsletter.
  • Attended the Community Associations Annual General Meeting on May 31, 2025 to inform community members of the project.
  • Informed Elbowfive8 Boardwalk (a new apartment complex that was recently built during Phase 1) residents by distributing posters in the lobby and most visible public areas.
  • Shared information with nearby communities during a Food Truck Frenzy event held on June 8, 2025 by the Mayfair Bel-Aire CA and Meadowlark Park CA.
  • Provided targeted social media and the online website for feedback.
  • Placed informative signage (with a QR code) in and around the park space.

About the Project

The project began in Fall 2024 where we first engaged with the community to learn how people regularly used the park space, what people most enjoyed about the current space, and what features would improve the park further. In Phase 1 of engagement, we learned that people living in the area highly valued the park space for recreation and as a place to relax and enjoy with family and friends.

In Phase 2 we presented two potential design concepts based on prior feedback that would help us narrow down an ideal park space that could be enjoyed by neighbours and community members of all ages.

Meadowview Park is located at 623 58 Avenue SW in the community of Meadowlark Park. This park site has been earmarked for future implementation of a dry pond to enhance the area’s stormwater drainage system and reduce the chances of localized flooding. Dry ponds are created to restrict the flow to the stormwater system, reducing the chances of becoming overwhelmed and helps prevent water from flooding into houses or businesses. A dry pond typically remains dry unless a significant rain event occurs.  The focus for this project is to add a dry pond and offer community members the opportunity to help shape their park into a useable space with features and amenities that everyone can enjoy. This area is experiencing significant growth and change, therefore it is important to provide parks and greenspaces that meet the needs of both existing and new residents. An official construction date has not been set but could begin in early 2026 lasting approximately six months.

Our goal is to create a space that is both welcoming and adds value to the growing community of Meadowlark. This project will offer the community a place to play, relax, gather, and socialize. We will look for ways to improve the park’s natural environment, add fun and seasonal activities, and manage storm water better.

Due to the requirements of the dry pond, we will have to remove the ball diamond and replace it with another feature. The playground will not be removed as it caters to a lot of children in the area. The vision of how the space could look and feel is up to those who live and use the space on a regular basis and is why we asked for your input. We will continue to provide you with updates and next steps as we move through the process of engagement.

The dry pond for the park space at 623 58 Avenue SW will reduce flooding during extreme rain events within the community. A dry pond provides temporary storage for stormwater during large rain events, typically to prevent flooding of downstream areas. A dry pond is almost always dry and will rarely fill to its full capacity. If it does, the pond should take a few hours to drain, depending on the length of the storm.

We are aware that the community of Meadowlark is also looking to redevelop the green space located at 90 Malibou Road SW and transform it into a more useable space. The project received input from a survey that was completed in 2023 and is still in the early stages, exploring fundraising opportunities to make it a reality. As progress moves along for this park space, we will provide updates.

Engagement Phase 1 - Project Overview

Phase 1 of engagement for Meadowview Park has been completed, with Phase 2 beginning this spring 2025. During Phase 1, we asked community members how they currently use the space, what they would like us to know about Meadowview Park and how they would like to see the space used in the future. The feedback revealed that the park space is well utilized and highly valued by the people in and around the area. They would like to see the space continue to be used for recreational activities as well as an area to gather with friends, families and for celebrations. Many felt that the increased density would make it essential to have a park space for more families to come and enjoy.

You can learn more about Phase 1 and read the What We Heard Report here.

Engagement Phase 2 - Project Overview

In this phase, we presented two design concepts and asked community members to choose the features that were most important to them to help inform the final design concept for the park space.

The following high level themes were captured as a result of public engagement during Phase 2.

  • Overall, respondents were in favor of the upgrades to the park space.
  • Few respondents expressed concern regarding the need for a dry pond and hoped the park would remain the same.
  • Respondents valued an open space for active play, but also a place to sit and relax.
  • Respondents would like to implement elements from concept 1 and 2 with most strongly favoring a sport court and a community garden.
  • Respondents appreciated natural elements as well as places to sit and gather

You can review the detailed Phase 2 What We Heard Report and Verbatim Feedback.

We provided two concepts that explored different ways to shape the park’s experience and character. These are two interpretations of how the space could evolve based on key themes we heard from the community during Phase 1 of engagement. Each approach invited different types of use and interaction, and we asked for your thoughts on what resonated most with you.

The two design concepts added a balance of active recreation, natural elements and areas for social gatherings. Both concepts allowed for a dry pond to be incorporated into the design, as well as an ice rink and fire pits in both options. Construction for the project will begin in early 2026 and will take approximately six months to complete.

The following concepts are not to be seen as a "vote" but rather, will help us determine peoples preferences as we work to narrow down a final version of the park space that best reflects the communities vision. You can refer to the maps below to see the elements we proposed in the space.

Next steps

Before construction begins, we'll share a detailed rendering of the park design, highlighting all the features planned for the space. Once the rendering is complete, it will be added to this webpage as part of the Reveal Phase.

Construction is expected to start as early as spring 2026 and will take approximately six months to complete. We encourage you to check back regularly for updates and to stay informed about the project's progress.
