Killarney Summer Park is closing October 16, 2025

We loved sharing this temporary, “pop-up” park with you, to try out new ideas and create community connections!

Next Steps

We will continue to work with Killarney-Glengarry Community Association on next steps. A final What We Heard report will be shared presenting what we heard from the public and how we used that feedback. With the end of this temporary "pop-up" park, amenities in the pop-up park will need to be returned to The City for use on other projects, in keeping with our asset management requirements.

About the Project

We are working with the Killarney Glengarry Community Association to build a temporary pop-up park for the Summer of 2025, with new games, art and seating for the community to enjoy. The pop-up park is located just south of the Killarney Aquatic & Recreation Centre on 19 Avenue between 29 and 30 Street SW.

The Westbrook Communities Local Area Plan wants “to ensure that residents of the Westbrook Communities have equitable access to a wide variety of public spaces that serve not only active and passive recreation needs for all ages and abilities through all seasons but also enhance environmental quality.”

The temporary Killarney Summer Park Pilot Project responds to this objective and will provide new opportunities for playing, socializing, relaxing, and gathering in the Killarney neighbourhood.

Therefore, The City is re-investing back into the community from the Local Area Plan Investment Fund to bring these improvements.

We are asking the community to share how they are using the park over summer by uploading pictures and stories below. That information will inform next steps for this pop-up, other parks in Calgary and potential long-term improvements for this park.

❓FAQ

  • What is a pop-up park?

A pop-up park involves activating a public space with temporary elements such as games, seating, and art that the public can use on an interim basis. Pop-up parks can be changed and modified throughout the project to adapt to what we learn people like to use, or if elements need to be modified/ or moved.

  • What do I do if things are broken or missing?

We have folks checking up on the park and replacing items regularly. We are also looking for community champions to help us out with stewardship. Please email killarneysummerpark@calgary.ca. Some items may need to be removed from the park if there are continued issues with breakage.

  • Why is the park closing?

This small, pop-up park created next to the Killarney Aquatic Centre was for interim (temporary) use only, to create added recreational and play spaces in the short term. The play elements were in place until Fall 2025.

  • What will happen with public feedback?

A "What We Heard" report will be presented here showing what we heard from the public.

Outdoor pool connected to Killarney pool could share changing rooms, front desk, lifeguards etc. it could be cost efficient.

This was lots of fun but the green bin for the equipment should be replaced. The lid is very heavy and a child’s fingers were crushed badly.

It would be great if the city would do this in areas without playground amenities, like by the Westbrook library - clean up the field!!!

Having a local ping pong table is great. I wish there was a second one since the table seem to be pretty popular.

The ping pong paddles and golf clubs are predictably broken and demonstrates why we can't have nice things. the other additions are great!
