About the project

The Douglas Fir Trail runs along a steep, unstable hillside that has been affected by erosion and water over many years, creating ongoing safety concerns. Inspections since 2014 identified the need for significant slope stabilization, and by 2023 some sections were no longer safe, leading to partial trail closures. Council-approved construction began in September 2025 to repair a 150‑metre section of slope above the Bow River Regional Pathway and is expected to continue until the end of 2026. While most of the 1.5‑kilometre trail is in good condition, additional unfunded work, such as realignments, drainage improvements, and ecological restoration, would be required to fully reopen the trail long term.

What participation looks like

We’re working to make the Douglas Fir Trail safe and sustainable for the long term. Community input will help shape how repair options are developed, evaluated, and refined — within clear safety and environmental requirements. Learn how you can be involved and how your feedback will be used.
