About the project

The Douglas Fir Trail runs along a steep, unstable hillside that has been affected by erosion and water over many years, creating ongoing safety concerns. Inspections since 2014 identified the need for significant slope stabilization, and by 2023 some sections were no longer safe, leading to partial trail closures. Council-approved construction began in September 2025 to repair a 150‑metre section of slope above the Bow River Regional Pathway and is expected to continue until the end of 2026. While most of the 1.5‑kilometre trail is in good condition, additional unfunded work, such as realignments, drainage improvements, and ecological restoration, would be required to fully reopen the trail long term.

What participation looks like

We’re working to make the Douglas Fir Trail safe and sustainable for the long term. Community input will help shape how repair options are developed, evaluated, and refined — within clear safety and environmental requirements. Learn how you can be involved and how your feedback will be used.

Our commitment to you:

  • We’ll be clear about what can and cannot change
  • We’ll use plain language and visuals
  • We’ll offer multiple ways to participate
  • We’ll share back what we heard and how it informed decisions

How to participate:

  • Learn about the different phases and provide feedback online by clicking one of the tiles below.
  • Attend an open house or pop-up in the park.
  • Check back often for updates and upcoming opportunities.

Outreach and Engagement

To start, we'd like to know how you'd like to participate in public engagement. Scroll down to the Present tile and click on the link to provide pre-engagement feedback.
  • Explore

    A two-step process.

First, we’ll ask what matters most to you — such as safety, the natural environment, access, and trail experience.

    (Summer 2026)

Then, we’ll share repair or realignment options that meet safety requirements and ask for your feedback on:

    • Benefits and concerns
    • Trade‑offs
    • Possible improvements or protections

    (Fall 2026)

  • Reveal

What we heard. What we did.

We’ll report back by clearly sharing:

    • What we heard from the community
    • What changed because of your input
    • What didn’t change and why
    • The next steps for the project
