Segment 2 | 90 Ave & Acadia Drive S.E. Mobility Improvements

Segment 2 (Fairmount Drive S.E. to Southland Drive S.E.)

Segment 2 is approximately 1.5km and stretches from Fairmount Drive S.E. to Southland Drive S.E. The roadway was narrowed to reduce vehicle speeds. To achieve this, most parking will be removed on the north/east side of the road, while all parking is kept on the south/west side of the road. Some trees may be removed where space is limited. A multi-use pathway has been added on the north/east side of the road in the boulevard space to provide continuous connection between Segment 1 and 3.

What We Heard / What We Did

See below the top themes we heard about Segment 2 during engagement and what we did to address them.

Improve visibility and sightlines

The design uses curb extensions which prevent vehicles from parking too close to the intersection, providing drivers with better sightlines at intersections.
Mixed opinion on removal of street parking

The design in this segment removes most on-street parking on the north and east side of the road and maintains all the existing on-street parking on the south and west side of the road to improve safety by narrowing the roadway, preserving the most trees, and adding a multi-use pathway.
Space for people walking, wheeling, cycling

The design includes a multi-use path which provides space for people to walk and wheel that is separate from motor vehicles.
The existing sidewalks will remain, providing a separated space for pedestrians that do not wish to share space with people wheeling.
Community aesthetics are important

The design preserves existing trees where possible, though some may be removed for construction, utilities, or sidewalk connections. Final numbers will be determined during detailed design. The multi-use pathway activates unused corridor space, connects to existing city assets such as transit services, and adds vibrancy to the community. Landscaping and varied surface treatments will create buffers between the path, road, and sidewalk.
Suggestions for simpler solutions and options

Widening the existing sidewalks was ruled out because this would significantly impact tree roots and the overall health of the trees.
Traffic signal timings will be adjusted with the design to improve traffic flow.
Narrowing the road surface, enhancing crossing opportunities for pedestrians, and separating people bicycling from motor vehicles will improve safety along the roadway.
