Collaboration
City Charters will recognize the shared interests of provincial and municipal governments. The Charters will introduce three provincial-municipal policy and planning tables that will develop regular workplans and priorities, and report progress to elected officials and the public. These tables will support the efficient use of public funds and delivery of public services, and identify opportunities to coordinate advocacy with the Federal government. Charter proposals in this area fall under three themes:
- Energy and Environment Policy and Planning table
- The Energy and Environment Policy and Planning Table will use the expertise and resources of each party to identify innovative approaches to shared priorities, drive more effective policies, save taxpayer dollars and support more timely implementation.
Proposal examples:- Collaboratively develop building labels for the private sector to encourage energy efficiency building status.
- Collaborate on the development of alternative energy industries and district energy systems.
- Improve coordination of waste reduction efforts.
- The Energy and Environment Policy and Planning Table will use the expertise and resources of each party to identify innovative approaches to shared priorities, drive more effective policies, save taxpayer dollars and support more timely implementation.
- Social Policy and Planning Table
- The Social Policy and Planning Table will identify how we can work better together to ensure that our policies, services and facilities offer a variety of opportunities for lifelong learning, are accessible and affordable, reduce social isolation and effectively respond to the social needs in our communities.
Proposal examples:- Seek ways to develop community hubs to optimize multiple uses of infrastructure and services.
- Create a province-wide electronic registration database for emergency social services, further expanding on the program and city support for evacuations across the province.
- Develop a program for major sport and cultural event attraction in Calgary and Edmonton.
- Provide the cities with accountability for social planning to address social well-being and social development in the city.
- The Social Policy and Planning Table will identify how we can work better together to ensure that our policies, services and facilities offer a variety of opportunities for lifelong learning, are accessible and affordable, reduce social isolation and effectively respond to the social needs in our communities.
- Transportation Policy and Planning Table
- The Transportation Policy and Planning Table Planning will help ensure that local and provincial projects support shared priorities, maximize the use of public resources, and enhance the quality of life in our cities and province.
Proposal examples:- Align infrastructure investment plans in order to facilitate smart growth and develop a sustainable, efficient transportation network.
- Share transportation infrastructure plans and priorities on a regular basis.
- Work together to develop a transportation and land use strategy to address long-term transportation issues
- The Transportation Policy and Planning Table Planning will help ensure that local and provincial projects support shared priorities, maximize the use of public resources, and enhance the quality of life in our cities and province.
