Overview

The Green Line speaker series provides some insight into key principles that are shaping the way we plan and design the new Green Line LRT.

In our first session, we explored “City-Shaping” and how the project has the potential to change entire communities along the alignment. Our second session looked at “How to build a transit village”, focusing on the transit-oriented approach to community planning. Our third session explored at how Green Line is “Shaping the way we move”. We looked at the transportation trends from the 1980s to today, how we plan to build on current trends and also heard from a group of panelists who have helped shape mobility in their city. Our fourth session looked to the future: What will the Calgary we pass to future generations look like? How does the new Green Line help shape the city for the future?

Session 3: Shaping the way we move

September 20, 2016, 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Over the past 20-30 years the city of Calgary has seen tremendous growth, both in jobs and population. Transit ridership has followed the expansions of the LRT network, averaging 320,000 passengers per day in 2016; the highest LRT ridership per capita in North America. Now with the Green Line LRT, we have another opportunity to plan for future growth of the city by providing Calgarians with even more ways of getting around.

This session explored the past, present and future of mobility options in Calgary and hear how panelists from around North America helped shaped mobility in their respective cities.

Session 2: How to build a transit village

June 21, 2016, 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

“Transit villages” are communities where connections are close by - connections to transit, work, school, shopping, eating and to other people. Local amenities are within walking distance as well as access to public transit for places further away. The Green Line team is looking at ways to integrate this vision with Calgary’s communities, creating spaces that are more sociable, accessible to more people and attractive to Calgarians today and in the future.

Session 1: City Shaping

June 2, 2016, 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

There is so much more to the Green Line than its 40 kilometres of track; it’s an opportunity to shape and define our growing city. With the development of great new places to live, work, play and shop around many of the new Green Line stations, the project will inspire new ways of building strong, vibrant communities.
